Row, Row, Row Your Boat!

Let the adventure begin. Brent and I went rafting the Ocoee River with some friends last weekend. I have to admit I was very nervous about going, especially after hearing several unnerving stories from family and friends that have been before. Lucky for us the friends that invited us were pro’s, they have been several times before and never had problems. The rafting adventure started with a 20 minute bus ride to the river while holding all safety gear which had a nice moldy-sweaty smell. At our destination we were given instructions on how to paddle and stay in the raft…the last of which was the most important to me - staying in! We met our guide (Rucker) which Kelly thought was 9yrs old and preceded to ask him if he even had a drivers license…thanks Kelly he is our life-line to get down this river in 1 piece for the next 4 hours. Things were not shaping out the way we had planned, we were hoping for an experienced crusty river dude not a kid on summer break! We made it thru the first couple of rapids fine and pulled off to the side to wait on the rest of our group when we hear…”Rucker, you’ve got swimmers”! As we look back the raft behind us had several guys fall out and we were the closest to rescue them. After losing a paddle and almost losing the guide we manage to get the 2 large dazed and confused guys in our raft. We off load them and make our way down the river only to find ourselves caught in a rapid called “Double Trouble” we almost lost everyone in the raft! The guide called it surfing when you continue to stay in the rapid and can’t get out. Oh but we did eventually get out and when we did Kelly got smacked in the nose with the handle of someone’s (?) paddle. She had a bloody nose and several sore teeth and was not able to finish the river. At this point we were all about done and wondering if the last ½ of the river was going to be as brutal, but Kelly insisted the rest of us finish. The last of the river was uneventful – Praise the Lord! It was great fun and even better company.
Thanks Brad, Kelly, Stephanie, and Chris for an awesome weekend!
